Smart Fish Feeder

An automated IoT-based aquarium feeding system with scheduled dispensing, servo motor actuation, and a web control dashboard.

Detailed preview of Smart Fish Feeder

Project Overview

The Smart Fish Feeder is an embedded hardware and web integration project designed to automate fish care. Built with an ESP32 microcontroller, a precision micro-servo, and an onboard web dashboard, the system allows users to set automated feeding schedules and trigger feeds manually from any local browser.

01.The Problem & Opportunity

Aquarium hobbyists and pet owners frequently face difficulties maintaining consistent feeding routines when traveling or during busy work schedules. Missing feedings can harm aquatic life, while inconsistent manual portions risk water contamination.

02.Solution & Architecture

Developed a standalone IoT device featuring a 3D-printable feed hopper and auger actuated by an SG90 servo motor. The ESP32 hosts a lightweight HTTP/WebSocket configuration portal, enabling users to calibrate feed portions, configure timers, and verify feeding events in real time.

Key Technical Features

Configurable timer intervals stored in non-volatile flash memory

Manual instant-feed trigger accessible through responsive web UI

Mechanical portion control calibrated via servo rotational sweeps

Local Wi-Fi connectivity with automated reconnect logic and status LED

Real-time event logging of completed feed executions

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Calibrating servo angular velocity to prevent food pellet crushing and dispenser clogging

Ensuring scheduled routines persist and execute properly even after temporary power cycles

Minimizing memory consumption for simultaneous web serving and servo PWM signal control on ESP32

Results & Realized Impact

  • Successfully deployed and tested on a home freshwater aquarium setup with consistent daily dispensing
  • Eliminated feeding schedule disruptions during multi-day travel periods
  • Demonstrated practical micro-controller engineering and embedded web development
